Launch of National Portal

The National Portal for Rooftop Solar was officially inaugurated by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, on July 30, 2022. The ceremony saw the esteemed presence of Shri R. K. Singh, Union Minister for Power and NRE, and Shri Krishan Pal Gurjar, MoS, Power and Heavy Industries. Additionally, Shri Bhagwanth Khuba, MoS, MNRE, participated virtually in the event. This initiative marks a significant step forward in promoting the adoption of rooftop solar energy across the country, fostering sustainable development and renewable energy utilization.

The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, popularly known as the Rooftop Solar Scheme, marks a significant stride towards sustainable energy practices. Launched in the 2024-25 budget by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, this initiative is poised to revolutionize the way households access and consume electricity.

At its core, the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana strives to provide 300 units of free electricity every month to one crore households nationwide. By promoting the widespread adoption of rooftop solar panels, the scheme aims to alleviate the burden of electricity costs and reduce reliance on conventional energy sources.

Benefits

Financial Savings: The scheme is expected to yield annual savings ranging from Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 18,000 crores through free solar electricity and surplus power sales to distribution companies.
Electric Vehicle Charging: It facilitates the charging of electric vehicles, further promoting eco-friendly transportation solutions.
Economic Opportunities: The initiative creates avenues for entrepreneurship by fostering a vibrant market for solar panel vendors. Additionally, it generates employment opportunities, particularly for youth skilled in solar panel installation, manufacturing, and maintenance.

Installation Subsidies:

The government provides generous subsidies to incentivize the adoption of rooftop solar panels:

Solar systems up to 2 kW: Subsidy of Rs. 30,000 per kW.

Additional capacity up to 3 kW: Subsidy of Rs. 18,000 per kW.

Total subsidy for systems exceeding 3 kW: Maximum of Rs. 78,000.

Installation Process:

Rooftop solar panels, also known as photovoltaic panels, are installed on the roofs of residential buildings and connected to the central power supply unit. This installation process promotes self-sufficiency by reducing dependence on grid-connected electricity. Through Net Metering, surplus energy generated by the solar panels can be sold back to electricity distribution companies, thereby offsetting electricity expenses.

How to Apply:

To apply for the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, follow these steps:

Visit the official website of the scheme.

Click on the ‘Apply for Rooftop Solar’ button.

Provide necessary details such as state, district, and electricity distribution company.

Enter your customer account number and contact information.

Complete the application form and await feasibility approval from the DISCOM.

Upon approval, engage a registered vendor to install the solar plant.

Submit plant details and apply for a net meter post-installation.

Following DISCOM inspection and commissioning, furnish bank account details for subsidy disbursement.
